Academic Integrity
in the age of
Artificial Intelligence

Nor.Education is offering a novel method that will help universities and schools to verify original student writing, thereby discovering generative AI and human ghostwriters.

THE PROBLEM HAS CHANGED

AI is challenging Assessment Security

Generative AI unlocks fantastic learning opportunities, but it also introduces a new challenge to some assessment formats.

Plagiarism scanners have proven efficient in detecting copying/pasting from internet and literature, but with Generative AI the problem has evolved.

It doesn't matter whether the text is authored by ChatGPT, a relative, or a commercial human ghostwriter.

Are we assessing the authentic work of the student?

HOW WE APPROACH THE PROBLEM

Authenticity is essential to Grade in Confidence

Nor Education helps ensure that you are assessing authentic student work.

Our method validates the student's own writing, thereby encouraging originality and rewarding good academic behaviour.

We search for you, rather than detecting plagiarism or AI.

As stated by JCQ - the UK Joint Council for Qualifications

”When reviewing a given piece of work to ensure its authenticity, it is useful to compare it against other work created by the student.”

OUR RELIABLE SOLUTION

Multi-factor Authorship Authentication

To verify authorship:

  • The submission is compared with the student's historical writing.
  • The student is also asked questions uniquely tailored to their submission's content.

Teachers have used this trustworthy method manually throughout time to disclose cheating. The challenge has been scaling it, especially when considering anonymous grading - until now!

Academic Integrity in the age of generative AI

Table showing existing cheating methods and how to discover them, including plagiarism checkers and authorship authentication

Nor Education's Authorship Authentication method is designed to verify authorship, thereby discovering human ghostwriting and ghostwriting by Generative AI services.

Together with the conventional Plagiarism checker designed to identify instances of collusion and direct copying, this covers all known forms of cheating on home assessments, as indicated by green above. While authorship authentication, by verifying the student's writing is documents the absence of collusion and copy/paste, a plagiarism checker is still recommended for this purpose, hence yellow above.

Regarding AI detectors, hence yellow above: Research says "available detection tools are neither accurate nor reliable" (Debra Weber-Wulff et al, 2023), and the recommendation from JISC says "whilst AI detection tools may have a part to play in maintaining academic integrity, they are by no means a full solution” (Michael Webb, 2024).

The Authorship Authentication System will be available in early 2024. We are offering registration of interest for research partners, our pilot program, and early adopter users.

  • Research Partner: We are looking for individual academic staff and teachers who are interested in measuring the accuracy and reliability of our method for the purpose of research and publishing.

  • Pilot Program (starting March 2024): We will invite a small group of faculties and schools to start using the system in a live environment of formative assessment, in close collaboration with us.

  • Early Adopter Program (from May 2024): A limited amount of institutions granted access to use the system from the spring exam season.

If you are not ready to commit but want full details about the method and solution, please ask for our "Whitepaper", request an "Online demo", or subscribe to our "Newsletter" where we will be posting updates about our progress.
